Stay or To Go: 존재의 경계에 선 예술
삶은 언제나 경계 위에 놓여 있다. ‘머무를 것인가, 떠날 것인가’라는 질문은 단지 물리적 이동의 여부를 묻는 것이 아니라, 존재의 조건과 정체성의 뿌리를 흔드는 깊은 질문이다. 《Stay or To Go》는 이 질문을 축으로, 강릉과 타이페이라는 서로 다른 지역성과 문화적 토대를 지닌 젊은 예술가들이 자신들의 삶과 예술을 가로지르는 정체성, 소속감, 그리고 실존의 긴장들을 응시하고 기록하는 전시다. 우리는 누구이며, 어디에 속해 있는가. 이 물음은 점점 더 유동적인 삶의 구조 속에서 과거보다 훨씬 더 복잡하고 불확실하게 떠오른다. 한때는 한 장소, 한 공동체, 하나의 언어가 한 인간의 정체성을 구성했다고 믿었지만, 지금 시대의 정체성은 더 이상 고정된 좌표가 아니라, 이동과 흔들림, 단절과 연결의 과정 속에서 끊임없이 다시 쓰여지는 이야기가 아닐까? 이 전시에 참여한 작가들은 바로 그 재구성의 여정 속에 있다. 강릉과 타이페이라는 서로 다른 도시에서 자라난 이들은, 자신의 문화적 배경과 삶의 경험을 매개로 소속과 이방성, 안착과 모험 사이를 끊임없이 오간다. ‘머무름’은 더 이상 안전한 귀결이 아니라 질문의 시작이며, ‘떠남’은 단순한 탈주의 행위가 아니라 스스로의 경계를 재정의하는 시도이다.
《Stay or To Go》는 작가 각자가 마주한 삶의 조건과 예술의 태도를 교차시킨다. 누군가는 자신의 몸을 통해 사회화된 경험의 구조를 드러내고, 누군가는 도시의 풍경 속에서 감정의 흔적을 추적한다. 또 어떤 이는 문화적 뿌리의 감각을 되묻고, 또 다른 이는 이동의 충동과 그로부터 발생하는 불안을 시각적으로 조직한다. 이들 모두의 작업은 고요하지만 단단한 언어로 말하고 있으며, 관람자는 그 언어를 따라 자신 또한 ‘머무름과 떠남’이라는 길 위에 서 있는 존재임을 자각하게 된다. 알베르 카뮈는 『이방인』에서 인간 존재의 부조리와 소외를 다뤘지만, 동시에 그 부조리 속에서도 살아갈 수밖에 없는 인간의 조건을 정직하게 바라보았다. 《Stay or To Go》는 그러한 맥락에서, 소속과 고립, 안주와 도약 사이의 긴장 속에서 자신의 삶을 구성하고 있는 동시대의 젊은 예술가들이 던지는 예술적 회답이다. 동시에 이 전시는 단절된 섬이 아닌, 연결의 장이다. 강릉과 타이페이라는 두 도시의 예술가들이 서로의 삶과 감각, 언어와 작업을 교류하며 새로운 관계를 구성하는 이 만남은, 문화 간의 소통이 예술적 실천에 어떤 진동을 만들어내는지를 보여준다. 그것은 단순한 영감의 교환을 넘어, 각자의 정체성이 국제적 맥락 속에서 어떻게 질문되고 전개될 수 있는지를 실험하는 장이다.
오늘날 예술은 질문을 던지는 방식으로 존재한다. 이 전시는 바로 그 질문이 갖는 무게와 섬세함을 진지하게 견디며, ‘나’와 ‘우리’, ‘여기’와 ‘어디’ 사이의 불완전한 균형을 탐색한다. 《Stay or To Go》는 어느 쪽도 명확히 답하지 않는다. 대신, 경계 위에 선 존재들이 어떻게 그 질문을 끌어안고, 자신의 언어로 응답해 나가는지를 보여준다. 그리고 그로부터 시작되는 또 다른 사유의 문이 열린다.
Stay or To Go: On the Threshold of Being
Life is always lived on a threshold. The question “to stay or to go” is not merely about physical movement—it is a profound inquiry that shakes the foundations of existence and identity. Stay or To Go is an international exchange exhibition that revolves around this question, bringing together young artists from Gangneung and Taipei who confront and document the tensions of identity, belonging, and existential positioning as they navigate their lives and artistic practices. Who are we, and where do we belong? In an era marked by constant flux and dislocation, these questions surface with growing complexity and uncertainty. There was a time when a fixed place, a shared language, or a singular community seemed sufficient to define one’s identity. But today, identity is no longer a static point of reference; rather, it is a story continually rewritten through movement and stillness, fragmentation and connection.
The participating artists stand precisely in the midst of this reconfiguration. Rooted in two different cities—Gangneung and Taipei—they move back and forth between belonging and estrangement, settlement and adventure. "Staying" is no longer a conclusion but a question in itself; "going" is not an escape, but a conscious act of redrawing one’s own boundaries. Stay or To Go presents an intersection of lived conditions and artistic responses. One artist explores the internalized structures of social experience through the body; another traces emotional residues in the urban landscape. Some question the sensory imprint of cultural inheritance, while others articulate the anxiety and desire triggered by the urge to move. These works speak in quiet but resolute voices, inviting viewers to realize that they, too, are beings poised on the edge—negotiating between staying and going. Albert Camus, in The Stranger, wrote about the absurdity and alienation of human existence, yet he also confronted the unyielding necessity of living within that absurdity. In that spirit, Stay or To Go becomes a collective artistic response from a generation of contemporary artists situated in the tensions between rootedness and isolation, between comfort and departure. At the same time, this exhibition is not an island of separation, but a space of connection. The encounter between artists from Gangneung and Taipei—across lives, sensations, languages, and artworks—reveals the vibrational possibilities of artistic practice shaped by cultural exchange. It is not simply the sharing of inspiration, but a site of experimentation: of how identity can be questioned, challenged, and expanded within a global context.
In today’s world, art exists through the act of asking questions. This exhibition patiently bears the weight and subtlety of such questions, exploring the imperfect balance between self and society, here and elsewhere. Stay or To Go offers no definitive answer. Instead, it reveals how those standing on the threshold embrace the uncertainty, and respond in their own language—opening yet another door to thought.
《Stay or To Go》：存在邊界上的凝視
人生始終站在邊界之上。「要留下，還是要離開？」這個問題，不只是對於物理移動的抉擇，更是一個撼動我們存在條件與身份根基的深層提問。
《Stay or To Go》正是以這樣的問題為核心，集結來自江陵與台北兩地，擁有不同地域性與文化根基的年輕藝術家，透過自身的生命經驗與藝術實踐，凝視並記錄身份、歸屬感與存在張力的國際交流展。
「我是誰？我屬於哪裡？」 在當代這個流動性與不確定性愈發顯著的時代，這樣的提問變得比以往更加複雜。一度被視為構成個體認同的地點、社群與語言，如今已不再是固定的座標。當代的身份，或許是一段段在移動與動搖、斷裂與連結中不斷重寫的敘事。
參展藝術家正行走在這樣的重構旅程中。他們在江陵與台北這兩座截然不同的城市成長，以其文化背景與個人經驗為出發點，在歸屬與疏離、安定與冒險之間來回穿梭。在他們的語境中，「留下」不再是穩妥的歸屬，而是提問的開端；「離開」也不僅是逃逸的動作，而是重新劃定自身邊界的行為。
《Stay or To Go》展現了藝術家如何以不同方式回應當下的生命處境與藝術姿態。有人透過身體揭示被社會化的經驗結構，有人追溯都市風景中的情感痕跡，有人回望文化根源的感知記憶，有人則將移動的衝動與由此產生的不安轉化為視覺語言。他們的創作，雖然安靜卻堅定地說話，引領觀者意識到：我們每一個人，也同樣站在「留下與離開」之間的路口上。
阿爾貝・卡繆在《異鄉人》中曾描繪人類存在的荒謬與疏離，同時也誠實地直面人之所以不得不繼續活下去的條件。《Stay or To Go》正是在這樣的語境下，成為當代年輕藝術家對於歸屬與孤立、安逸與出走之間張力所做出的藝術性回應。
同時，這不只是一次地域之間的對話，而是一場關於「連結」的提案。來自江陵與台北的藝術家，在彼此的生活、感知、語言與作品中建立新的連結，展示了文化交流如何為藝術實踐帶來深層震盪。這不只是靈感的交換，更是對於「身份」在全球語境中如何被提問與拓展的探索現場。
今日的藝術，不再只是答案的呈現，而是提問本身的形式。
這場展覽誠實地承擔這些提問所蘊含的重量與細膩，試圖在「我」與「我們」、「此地」與「他方」之間探索那不完美的平衡。
《Stay or To Go》沒有試圖給出明確的解答。它選擇呈現那些站在邊界之上的存在者，如何擁抱這些提問，並以自身的語言做出回應。而正是從這些回應之中，又一扇思考之門，悄然打開。
